AIROLO TO COMO

I will remember the dinner we had in Airolo  for a delicious risotto flavoured with balsamic and lemon, followed by a second course of salmon on a bed of roast/mashed potatoes with asparagus.

The next morning there was a change in the weather and we made a long descent from Airolo on wet roads, but thankfully no rain. We passed a "devil's bridge" many hundreds of years old.

We had a long ride of 148km to that day and before lunch had a climb of about 400m with a maximum gradient of about 14%. After lunch, I rode with Bruno our French guide and stopped briefly by the side of Lake Lugano to take a photo of him with Sam.

We crossed in to Italy only 5 to 6km from the Italian border and our route took us by this picturesque old church.

and less than a kilometre from there we reached our destination: "The Hotel Borgo Antico".

That night, we had dinner in a great and obviously very popular Italian restaurant. Gone were the slightly meagre portions of France and Switzerland and we had a great meal. The restaurant had a Sicilian flavour so seafood figured fairly heavily on the menu. Fantastic dishes of sardines and mussels.

That brings us to today, Sunday June 5th and my backside can't quite get over the shock of having a rest day! A portion of the morning has been used up with a visit to the launderette.

Great to have dry, clean clothes again.

Meanwhile Ritchie, guide + super bike mechanic has been fixing any problems we have had with our bikes, replacing brake pads where necessary and generally being the fantastic help that he has been all along the way.

Sam, as usual has been coping with things in his own impeturbable way and loading our Garmins with maps for the next two weeks, before he heads back to Australia and be replaced by Dillon (?Poodle and ?Standard or Toy) Sorry, in joke!!

I'll be off to do a bit of sight seeing around Como and hopefully update this blog tonight.

Please, if you have time, read my first post of this blog, which hopefully gives my reason for doing the whole thing. If you feel like donating to help in Brett's recovery, the http address of my "Go Fund me" account is:
